If you have been looking for a way to keep all your audio visual, home automation and communication equipment tidy, then you have been looking for an AV Rack.
A standardised frame, it also houses communication equipment like amps, players (like DVD players, Sky boxes and even consoles like PlayStations etc) and other devices. Great for reducing clutter and getting everything all tucked away, racks are used to organise all your equipment, including IT equipment, into standardised assemblies to make the best use of space.
Not only do they reduce clutter, they are also built to house electronics, which means that your equipment will be protected and last longer. Ideally racks improve cooling, power protection and cable management, as well as mobility and device management – as everything is easy to access.
Why shelves and racks aren’t suitable
If you have spent a lot of money on a home cinema system or speaker set up, or indeed security, it would not only be a real shame to have an unorganised clutter of electrical items, it would also reduce the life of your equipment. This is because:
- Airflow can be restricted by solid shelves and wire racks, which can cause your equipment to overheat, leading to damage.
- Equipment is not as secure
- Dissipation doesn’t happen in the way It needs to, damaging the equipment’s longevity.
AV Racks are also easier to set up and upgrade, as well as giving easy access to your equipment so that you can service it or give it an upgrade.
Do you need an AV Rack?
AV Racks have become popular in most commercial and household electronic installation projects.
Available in various heights and configurations, they include different features, depending on your needs – and whether you would benefit from one or not depends on the number of electrical items you have in your room/across your home or business. It also depends on how you would like your equipment to look. If you have lots of equipment or you just want what you have to look tidy, you need an AV Rack. And the majority of the time you would be better off with a customised rack.
Other things to consider
In terms of aesthetics and practicalities, racks can be placed anywhere that you need them and have space – so they can be as prominent or tucked away as your space in your home or office allows. Ideally your rack should be in a place which is easy to keep cool or there’s some ventilation to ensure airflow and to prevent them overheating and to help heat to be removed.
In terms of set up, we would recommend placing equipment which is likely to produce the highest amount of heat near the top of the rack, so that it doesn’t overheat the equipment that’s above it (as heat rises). If that’s not possible, it’s best to add a fan above the unit.
