What are aerial sockets?

A TV aerial socket is referred to as the female antenna connector. It has slots or holes where the pins or blades of an aerial plug (known as the male antenna connector) would fit. This connection will allow the delivery and receipt of of TV signal. The socket is usually installed mounted to the TV or the wall.

How to install a TV aerial socket

To properly install the sockets, make sure you have the right tools and equipment for the job. Here’s a guide:

  • Trimming knife
  • Wire cutters and strippers
  • Insulated screwdriver set
  • Pliers
  • Coaxial TV cable
  • Cable clips
  • Splitter unit
  • Two flush-fitting coaxial socket outlets

Here are some guidelines in installing your aerial socket:

  1. Prepare the cable route from the splitter position to the socket position. If needed, prepare the route where the cable enters the house as well.
  2. Mount the boxes for the flush-fitting outlets. Create holes that are easily accessible. Fit the grommet, and screw them in place.
  3. Place the cable following the route that you created.
  4. Feed the cable end for each outlet. If you are using plaster, wait for it to dry.
  5. Prepare the cable ends by creating a small split lengthwise using your trimming knife. The split should be about 0.5 cm, and must be created at the end of the outer sheath. Fold the sheath back and cut it off. Loosen the wire mesh. Fold it back leaving about 0.2 cm of wire insulation. Cut 0.15 of the insulation.
  6. Secure the inner wire in place by loosening the clamp, securing the wire and cable under it and then screwing the clamp tightly back in place. Screw the socket in place outside the mounting box. be careful not to let the strands of mesh touch the inner wire.
  7. Secure the splitter to the joist or skirting. Push the aerial cable plug into the right socket.
  8. Plug the cables into the splitter outlets. The two other cables should go into the socket at one end, and the TV set at the other end.
