Speaker Socket with Banana PlugsHow to Use Banana Plugs with Your Speaker Wires

This tutorial is going to show you how you can install side-entry banana plugs with your speaker wires, to perhaps network with your satellite and speaker socket. In the picture to the right you can see how we did this for one of our customers in East London.

First, Why Banana Plugs?

There are lots of good reasons to use banana plugs with speaker wires. The most prominent comes into play when your project includes behind the wall installations. Rather than punching holes, it’s better to use wall plates that typically have a banana plug jack. Additionally, from an aesthetic perspective, they look nicer.

Step 1) After you’ve cut the wire to your desired length, run the wire behind the designated wall before attaching your banana plugs. Make sure to give yourself enough room and slack to work.

Use some wire strippers and leave about 2 inches on the end of exposed wire. Now you should see two colors of wires, one for the audio signal, and one for the ground connection.

Step 2) Use your wire strippers again to take the inner wire jackets of and leave about 2/4ths of an inch of space. Now you have exposed wires, so put away the wire strippers and grab your banana plugs. Untwist the wires, straighten them, and then you can either go in from the back or the side. As you can see, we chose to go in from the side.

Step 3) You should see the wires inside stretching out, and so now you can screw the back of the plug down. If done correctly it secures the wires inside.
