Home Audio Buying Guide: Here are some tips for you before you spend all that cash on a new audio system.

A good home audio system is an investment for any home. If you like watching movies from your couch, or you like entertaining friends, then there’s more reason for you to make the investment. However, going shopping for a new home audio system can be tedious because of the number of products available.

For example, it may sound easier to just buy a home audio kit because it includes everything needed for a home theater system, except a TV set. However, it is important to understand that while all theater systems will have the components of a home audio systems, the it is not the same vice versa.

Let’s Make It Simple.

Consider these factors before splurging:

  • Purpose: Consider what activities you will use your audio system for. For example, if you like watching movies at home, then a surround system would be a good choice.
  • Room Size: The best sound quality will also depend on the kind of audio system you get versus the size of the room. If you have a very big room, then you may want to consider getting full- ranged, full- sized speakers.
  • Budget: Whether you are planning to spend or splurge, remember that the size of the room will tell you how much you will spend to get a good quality audio system. A larger room will need a bigger cash out to get good quality speakers.

Stereo vs Surround

What’s the difference?

Stereo is the most common type of audio used. Some examples of stereo are iPhones, laptop speakers, built- in TV speakers, boom boxes and portable CD players. Most of the music released today come in a 2-channel stereo format. This means good quality stereo speakers produce the same sound quality as using a surround system’s front left and right speakers to play stereo music.

A surround sound system has 6 channels. Each one goes to a speaker placed around the room. Home theater audio systems have a standard of at least 5.1 surround system. Many DVDs, TV shows and concerts come in 5.1 surround capabilities as well. The idea is in concerts, for example, the audience noise goes to the back speakers, the instruments go to the periphery or front right and left speakers, and the vocals are centered. This is the same technique applied to movies. The sound of the train, for example, is channeled so that it runs across the room from the rear to the front so that it sounds more realistic.

HTiB vs Component Audio System

Two main options for surround sound systems are the home theater in a box and the component audio system. HTiB is a complete kit that includes all the components and accessories needed. On the other hand, components and accessories are purchased separately for a component audio system.

While HTiBs are cheaper and come in smaller sizes, component audio systems have better quality. You also have the option to customize the components and accessories, as you buy them separately. If you are looking for an easier purchase and more convenient set up, HTiB is a good choice. However, if you want a more customized system with higher sound quality, then spending the time to select the components and accessories will give you a more satisfactory result. Just remember that you will need to have some know- how in selecting the items at the store as well as in setting it up.

The last tip from our home audio buying guide is: read reviews. Before you purchase anything, research the brands and components you have been eying. Read customer reviews and blogs to keep you informed.
