Are you planning to add Sonos to your entertainment system? If you are, you should get to know Sonos more.

Meet Sonos

Sonos is an electronics company based in Santa Barbara, California that is most known for its award- winning wireless multi- room music system. The company has upped its game in recent years, becoming more public with its profile and more aggressive with advertising. And while their products what changed in size and shape, the way they work remains the same. That is, one device is connected to the home Wi-Fi that allows it to play music from local sources and cloud services. Other devices are connected together using a wireless mesh network.

In essence, the components talk to each other using a proprietary speaker- to- speaker network; only one component needs to be connected to your home network and the rest are connected directly to each other. This means you can listen to music using any of the speakers, or you can link all the speakers so that they play the same music. The speakers can be controlled using a PC or a Mac desktop application, or iOS or Android apps.

The Products

There are several speakers and solutions that, when put together, make one large system. The newest of these is the Sonos Play:1, a single small speaker with two drivers. The Sonos Play:3 has three drivers, hence the name, and is slightly larger. It also costs about £100 more. The Sonos Play:5 is the largest in the range, with five drivers and featuring a deep base. In addition, you can also get the PlayBar, a soundbar that you can place under your TV, and the Sub, a wireless subwoofer. You can link your speakers together to create a surround sound system for your home cinema.

Other components include the Bridge, which works as the wireless hub connecting your speakers to your home network. The Connect:Amp has an amplifier that you can hook up to your stereo, while you can plug the Connect to a separate AV or amplifier.

Listen To

Your new system will let you listen to:

  • Spotify
  • Deezer
  • Napster
  • 7Digital
  • Amazon Cloud Player
  • Rdio
  • Pandora (in the US)

There are also more choices in the dedicated channels in the Sonos app for Android and iOS. You can play music stored in your phone or tablet and access internet radio through TuneIn.
