How often should burglar alarms be serviced?

Burglar alarms are a key part of a home and business security system – and definitely something that you don’t want to let you down. Whether you’ve moved into a property with a security system, installed a burglar alarm or upgraded your CCTV system, it’s vital you keep it serviced regularly, so it can perform as it was meant to. To ensure that they are fully functional, all year round, you should make sure that burglar alarms are serviced, but how often?

Different types of burglar alarm – different service times

Featuring a complex set of components, burglar alarms need to be checked by a professional to ensure they are working properly, and how often this needs to take place varies by the design of the alarm.

In most cases, burglar alarms should be serviced annually, but if your system is hooked up to a police-approved monitoring system, you may want to increase that to six months: the reason being that if you have incidents of false alarms, then it will lead to a lower response rate from police in the future. To avoid this, you’ll need to keep up a maintenance schedule, which will not only ensure your security system operates as it should, but it will increase its life span.

Monitored home alarm systems

Home alarm systems are connected to an external, accredited security company who charge a fee to monitor your system and respond as needed. If your alarm is triggered, they will contact you. If they can’t reach you, they will call the police or your nominated key holders.

It’s advised that if your system involves both visual and audible alarms, this type of alarm should be checked and serviced at least twice a year. If yours is audible only, an annual check should suffice.

What does a basic burglar alarm service involve?

  • Your alarm technician will look over the history and log of your alarm system since its last service
  • All major components are visually checked, along with their connections and cabling, to ensure there are no signs of deterioration or damage
  • Its power supply and the charging rates of the system will be checked, along with the battery power and charging way
  • All detectors are checked, as well as signalling and remote equipment
  • Manually operated devices such as panic buttons are changed

All test results are then logged by the alarm technician, who will bring your alarm system settings back to normal.
